If you remember when the Wonderful World of Disney was on ABC on Sunday nights, then you also remember their wonderful world of “color! color! color!” and this first picture is for you:
Mrs. Ombud timed our visit for a flower show at the Epcot Center, as is florally apparent. I also got a kick out of the face-painting, as you can see here on the left side of the queue for the haunted mansion:
Among the pleasures of hanging out at Disney World is the chance to glance up and see apes overhead:
Here he is facing the other way:
and at the very same time, look down to see ducklings at your feet:
to be honest, most of my photos, other than the baseball ones, were of animals. More on that later. But I did take some pictures at the 50s prime time cafe in the Hollywood Studios theme park, which cafe was a joyous combination of comfort food, amusing clips from the golden age of TV, and Americana kitsch:
(I think it’s a clip of Dennis the Menace on the TV there)
check out how all of the televisions say “Disney” on them
Note the waitress’s uniform, it’s perfect for the restaurant’s theme.
Having multiple televisions in every room probably isn’t too authentic to most 50’s experiences, but then, authenticity can be carried too far.
I initially didn’t care for this pic of the missus holding a drink with a glowing ice cube, due to the shadow, but it’s become one of my favorites:
which might be a good time to include one of her favorite motifs, the flamingos from Animal Kingdom:
The truth is, Mrs. O simply had more endurance for the place than I did. She could go on into the evening, whereas, after dinnertime, I was usually headed back to our room. Which was when I saw one of the favorite images — a middle-aged man, in a red shirt, with a bit of a belly, in a pink Minnie Mouse ears hat, nodding off on the bus. Unfortunately, I had left my camera on the “close up” setting, so the photo could have been better, but here he is:
the place can have that effect on a guy.
I can see why the glowing ice cube picture of your wife grew on you. I liked it right off. It has a mysterious look.
Ben,
your wife shared the blog and photos… I am so envious…
The photos are great…
Bonnie
I like the glowing ice cube shot, too. Looks like a version of Wall-E-meets-ET in her glass.
I don’t think I could do a multi-day trip to Disneyland, although my daughters could. And my sister. She’s like Mrs. O. But I did do about 12 hours in a single day, could hardly walk to catch the little train out of the park. It was fun but exhausting!
Great shots.
I have to say that theme parks are my idea of hell, but Mrs Ombudsben has really beautiful eyes and I love the gibbon shots!
Bonnie, you would have been the perfect companion for the missus on this trip. Yb, the thing about Disneyworld is that there are so many different parks, it makes a multi-day trip a bit easier — still I’d have been fine with more adventures outside of Disney’s domain.
Thanks for the kudos on the photo, yb & anhinga! And yes, t-woo, she does have beautiful eyes. 🙂
I love that photo of your wife. It’s great. 🙂
The last photo is priceless.
pretty cool pics, Ombud. Thanks for sharing. I would SO be that guy in the last pic. : )
Thanks, Robin, and you, too, Jules! Now I want to see what you look like with mouse ears.
