So, I’m sitting at a new desk at work. I don’t know how long I’ll be there, although the powers that be have moved my computer down to the new office, which is on the opposite corner of our block from where I used to work. It might be a matter of weeks, or months or even years. I might find out sometime before I retire.

Or I might not. Some things, in my mandarin work world, are determined not even in San Francisco, but in Sacramento. Let’s just say that there is a prominent politician who has appeared in Hollywood action movies who has a say in it, and leave it there.

My assistant brewer, Dave, is good at incredulity, among other things. He’s smart, a fount of the kind of quasi-useful knowledge copyeditors excel at (e.g., they are vocal cords, not chords; the word is actually supersede, not supercede, although some style manuals now accept the typo as a new “variant”), he knows a lot about movies, books, and dinosaur rock, and he has the kind of wry wit I can either hear or not, depending on how preoccupied I am with whatever brewing conundrum I’m contending with.

We walked out along the bay shore this morning, enjoying the slanting dawn light rising over the east bay hills, casting long tree shadows across the open fields. I heard a splash to my right, and saw a small least tern rise from the rippling water, then noticed another and another.

Earlier this week I passed by three small, slender trees struggling to survive on Golden Gate avenue and, with the oncoming summer dry season in mind, I thought, maybe a few times this summer I’ll put a water jug in my pack and come out here to try and keep these poor guys going.
