Some of you who have checked in here for a while might remember my lager adventure last January. I had another brewing mishap this weekend. While the lager marathon went down in the cold, this time my friend Dave and I just did our Laurel and Hardy routine in the warmth of an October Sunday afternoon.

I was channel surfing for playoff baseball last night (which now flips around from network to network like William Shatner seeking cameras and microphones), looking for the Red Sox/Indians game, when I happened on the hunting and fishing channel.

Okay, a little research would have let me know it wasn’t the best year to visit the Upper Midwest looking for autumn color. The Midwest had a dry spring and summer, then a very stormy September.

At first it was just puppies and kittens. They bounced off the pavement and ran down the gutters with a hissing sound. Then they grew bigger, tabbies and Pekinese, and wilder, Maine Coon and Schnauzers pouring down, and walking round a building I was hit with a gust of wind and doused with whippets, the sidewalk slick with slithering Russian Blue, Finnish Spitz, and then it all opened up, baying beagles and bloodhounds, I saw spots, a whole dizzying Disney-full of Dalmatians, and bent forward and surged on, howling like Yukon Huskies.
