I’ve been keeping an eye on this little tree during our morning dog walks. It’s in an abandoned motorhome park on the former naval air station, which military personnel, mostly retired I guess, used before they closed the base.
And as I mentioned earlier, every so often I felt and heard a buzzing presence. The tree has a hummingbird who guards his tree jealously; that’s him on his perch.
It’s a pretty setting. The old barbecues are rusty now, and the wiring has all been ripped out, some of it by copper thieves. But as you can see above, Ernie found his happy spot.
This little hummer has his happy spot, too. Morning after morning, he’s on that perch.
He? Maybe it’s she, for all I know. He/she sure has staked out territory. And not shy about buzzing two-legged intruders, either.
Pretty colors, no?
It’s always so cool to be close to a hummer. I caught a shot one time with one sitting on a tomato cage by my hummer plant and was thrilled. Wonder if they know the effect they have on humans.
Pretty colours and excellent shots.
Wow
I don’t have the camera to get shots like that, but I do love watching the hummingbirds around here as well. Especially when they alight on a favorite branch. Lovely pictures.
What a beautiful hummingbird! Great shots, too. They are not always easy to capture (that goes for most birds, in my experience).
Thanks, all.
I get such a kick out of this little guy. While he has buzzed me in the past, he seems calmer lately. I got close enough to take these pictures, and he was unperturbed.
Unlike some of the ones we get in our backyard. I’ve seen them buzz my dogs repeatedly on our backdeck! The pups weren’t even close to any of the trees or shrubs.
It always amazes me when I see a hummingbird in repose. I always thought they were like sharks – if they stopped moving they would die.
Apologies for being such a bad blog buddy. But it always makes me happy to see my friends are still posting and doing well.
No worries, LB. I know you have a lot going on, and it’s always good to hear from you.
In fact, given the usual level of internet discourse (have you ever noticed the meanness in newspaper comment sections?), I think I’m pretty lucky to have such civil and interesting blogging friends.
