A, we've had a good bit of rain lately, and the little tree seems to be hanging in there. The little nubbins seem to be growing, which I hope promises leaf buds in a few months.

For several mornings in a row I noticed a hummingbird perched in one of the top branches, but I never had the camera with me. Little fellow just perched there, bold as can be, never leaving as I walked right up to the tree.

Thanks, Seb!

LB, I think it's numerous spiders. The island is overrun with them, at any rate. And I'll bet you're the first person ever to use the term arachnalaissezfaire ...

It's taken me way too long to get back here; Truce, you're right, and it's interesting to me that Pride & Prejudice and Sense & Sensibility get so much more publicity.

J, with an eye-grabbing title like that, I can see how it would stay with you, and Robin--yes, this post must be a sign. *smile*

I have not read Emma and have been meaning to, especially since my first granddaughter was named after the title character (Jane Austen's 'Emma' is my daughter-in-law's favorite book).

Perhaps I'll take your post as a sign...

I haven't read Emma since college...not that I read it for a class, but that's how old I was when i read it. I'm thinking I maybe should pick it up again sometime soonish.

I was recently bombarded on three sides to read a book called something like "The Guernsey Potato Peel Pie and Literary Society". Isn't that a horrid title? I finally succumbed to the pressure, and I was very glad I did. Really a good book. No Emma, however.

I have two books on my iPhone - Emma and Jane Eyre. Both favourites and both have been re-read time and again since my early teens in a variety of editions and formats.

Jane Austen's characterisation is so well-observed - so wicked and yet so understanding - that I defy anyone who is interested in people not to love her books.

Also, Mr Knightley is the best literary hero: far more attractive than Mr Darcy IMHO, who is arrogant and a snob. :)

Thank you for the spidery shout out. Those are some fine looking webs. I, too, especially enjoyed the overlapping ones. Are those the work of one overly ambitious spider? Or maybe it's a mother and mommy's boy combo. And I've also wondered where they are when they aren't in their web? Running errands? Buying silk? At an arachnid meet up?

As for my personal attitude towards spiders, I wouldn't call myself arachaphilic, but rather arachalaissezfaire.

I hope your little tree lives. It appears to be doing fine. Your wife has the name I have always heard, sucker. I think it is called that because it sucks nutrients that could be used to make stronger branches further up. So the park service probably did lop them off--but for a good reason.

I hope that guy on the ferry gets a raise. :-)
I did think of you when I heard about the bridge. If only we had the public transportation in Orlando that some places have. We've been holding our breath for years waiting for commuter train plus speed rail to Tampa. Politics keep getting in the way.
