I’m looking at my new Canon EOS XTi. I’ve stopped procrastinating about buying a digital SLR camera and have only just begun procrastinating on figuring out how to use it.
It has all kinds of mysterious little logos and symbols. Both on the body of the camera and in the diagram explaining the LCD screen. It comes with everything I need, including a lens and a battery and a strap, all of which I’ve assembled (ok, Mrs. Ombud did the strap), except it did not come with a “CF card.”
But I’ve educated myself on what a CF card is, and intend to go out and stimulate the economy by purchasing one of those, too, and continuing right on with stimulating my own mental faculties by installing the darn thing in my camera, so I can begin making use of the AF and the ISO and all manner of other digital functionality missing from my old analog reality.
Right now I’m supposed to be installing the CD-Rom on my computer so I can transfer images from the camera and the CF card right through to the PC and this blog, but I got distracted by an email from a friend inviting me to Goodreads.com, which I joined.
I’m looking forward to figuring out how the site works (I found the worst books of all time list intriguing). But I busted myself for procrastinating, and logged out of there.
And then I procrastinated further by writing all this.
But enough. It’s time to install the CD-Rom, and join the digital photographic reality of the 21st century. Mrs. Ombud is eager for me to get up and running with the dad-blamed thing, so I can take some pictures she wants. Besides, I know what my first digital photo is going to be – but enough. Enough of this procrastinating.
(I miss the smell of darkroom chemicals.) (Stop that!)
Here I go.
Good luck!
Excellent Camera!
Congrats, Ben, on the new camera. Have you had time to play with it yet? I look forward to your images. There is a learning curve. Don’t be disappointed with your first digital attempts.
Let me know if you have any questions, I’ll do my best to help.
Thanks, all! I’m making some progress in figuring it out. Stevo, I may take you up on that offer.
So you’ve come to the dark side. It’s ok, Ombud… embrace the dark side. Digital manipulation, instant gratification, 100s of pics on one CF card. : )
I’ve been somewhat absent but I’ve been trolling a little keeping up with everyone. I’ve been wanting to comment on your new piece of gear but hadn’t been able to make the time.
NICCCCCE! camera.
I miss darkroom chemicals, too. I experimented with digital photography when I was in the Marine Corps and my base was one of the first to get a digital camera back in 1994 but I flipped over to completely in December of 2002 when I started freelancing for the paper here again.
I haven’t gone back simply for a lack of time. Now with The Deistette in the house, it’s for a lack of space. : (
Lookin forward to seeing some of your pics.
